Pigs are highly intelligent animals with complex behavioral needs that are poorly met in conventional intensive farming systems.
Pigs in barren intensive systems express frustration through tail biting, stereotypic behaviors, and aggression. Tail docking, practiced without anesthesia to prevent biting, is itself a welfare harm caused by failing to address the root cause. Providing adequate space, enrichment materials, and social groupings addresses the fundamental welfare need.
