Efforts to retire captive orca whales to seaside sanctuaries represent a major animal welfare initiative aimed at improving conditions for these long-suffering animals.
Captive orcas in tanks experience chronic deprivation of natural behaviors including long-distance travel, complex foraging, and rich social life with their natal family group. Seaside sanctuaries would provide ocean water, tidal flows, and vastly more space, dramatically improving welfare even if full reintroduction is not possible.
