Manatees are highly sensitive to cold water and face life-threatening cold stress syndrome when water temperatures drop below safe thresholds.
Manatees experiencing cold stress syndrome become lethargic, stop feeding, and develop life-threatening infections. Without rescue and warming, severely affected animals die slowly from starvation and infection. The closure of warm water power plant outflows has reduced available refuge habitat, increasing cold stress events.
