Pyometra is a life-threatening uterine infection in intact female dogs that requires emergency surgery and is entirely preventable through spaying.
Dogs with pyometra experience rapid systemic deterioration from sepsis including lethargy, excessive thirst, vomiting, and collapse. Closed pyometra is particularly dangerous because there are no external signs until the dog is critically ill. Surgical treatment saves lives, but spaying prevents the condition entirely.
