Hip dysplasia is a heritable developmental condition causing chronic pain and osteoarthritis in dogs, and breeding programs can dramatically reduce its prevalence.
Dogs with hip dysplasia experience chronic pain from joint laxity and progressive osteoarthritis. Pain worsens over years, eventually limiting normal activity. Without selection against the condition in breeding programs, high rates of suffering persist across generations of affected breeds. Surgery including total hip replacement can restore excellent function.
