Loggerhead sea turtles face substantial mortality from longline and trawl fisheries bycatch, with drowning, hook injuries, and barotrauma causing significant individual suffering and population-level threats.
Drowning in fishing gear is a death by suffocation - a prolonged and distressing process for air-breathing reptiles. Turtles that survive longline entanglement may have hooks embedded in the esophagus, stomach, or flippers causing chronic pain and impaired feeding. Buoyancy disorders from barotrauma leave turtles unable to dive normally. The technological solutions - circle hooks, TEDs, modified gear - exist and are proven. The barrier is primarily economic and regulatory compliance, not technological.
