Farmed Octopus Welfare and the Ethics of Cephalopod Aquaculture

Commercial octopus farming is being developed by several companies despite growing scientific evidence that octopuses are highly intelligent, sentient animals for whom captive conditions cause significant suffering.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Octopus farming presents one of the most acute welfare challenges in animal agriculture: animals with well-documented cognitive sophistication that are biologically incompatible with the crowded, monotonous conditions of commercial aquaculture. Their cannibalistic nature means confinement density that prevents natural behavior causes both predation and severe psychological stress. Unlike many aquaculture welfare improvements that require minor husbandry changes, octopus welfare fundamentally conflicts with commercial viability of farming. The ethical case for not farming octopuses is exceptionally strong.
