Carp are the most widely farmed fish globally, primarily in Asia and Eastern Europe. Despite this scale, welfare standards for carp aquaculture are less developed than for salmon and trout.
The welfare of farmed carp deserves attention commensurate with the scale of their production. Oxygen depletion events cause mass stress and death. Live transport and slaughter by asphyxiation cause prolonged suffering. The same principles that apply to salmon welfare — adequate water quality, humane slaughter, stress minimization during handling — apply equally to carp production at all scales.
