Urethral obstruction is one of the most acute, painful, and rapidly fatal emergencies in cats, requiring immediate recognition and emergency intervention within hours of symptom onset.
Urethral obstruction causes some of the most intense acute suffering of any feline emergency. The sensation of being unable to urinate while experiencing increasing abdominal pressure and metabolic deterioration is profoundly distressing. Cats strain repeatedly in obvious discomfort. The condition is time-critical: a cat seen straining without producing urine at 8 AM is in a very different situation at 8 PM or the following morning. The reflex to 'wait and see' is dangerous - urethral obstruction is one of the few veterinary conditions where immediate action is categorically better than observation.
