Immune-mediated polyarthritis causes simultaneous inflammation in multiple joints, creating severe, acute pain that can be mistaken for other conditions and often responds dramatically to appropriate treatment.
IMPA causes one of the more dramatic welfare transformations in clinical veterinary medicine: dogs that cannot rise without crying, that will not bear weight on any leg, and that appear profoundly unwell frequently recover to near-normal function within 48-72 hours of appropriate glucocorticoid treatment. The contrast makes the pre-treatment suffering all the more stark in retrospect. Recognition of IMPA as a differential for acute multi-limb lameness - rather than assuming orthopedic injury - allows prompt treatment that prevents extended unnecessary suffering.
