Pangolins are the world most trafficked wild mammal, and innovative anti-poaching strategies are working to counter the sophisticated criminal networks involved.
Pangolins in transit experience extreme stress - they are typically immobilized in cramped, dark containers, dehydrated, and injured during capture and handling. Most die before reaching their destination. The stress response in pangolins is so severe that even rescued animals are difficult to rehabilitate. Prevention of capture is the only truly effective welfare intervention.
