Urban foxes are adaptable, successful wildlife in many cities. Coexistence approaches that manage human-fox interactions humanely produce better outcomes than lethal control for both foxes and residents.
Urban foxes face welfare challenges including mange, urban hazard exposure, and sometimes lethal control programs. Mange causes severe, prolonged suffering — intense pruritus, hair loss, skin thickening, and progressive debilitation over months. Effective welfare responses include targeted mange treatment and habitat management to reduce dependence on human food sources. Lethal culling of urban foxes is ineffective for population control as vacated territories are rapidly recolonized.
