Gastric dilatation-volvulus is a rapidly fatal emergency in large deep-chested dogs that can be prevented with prophylactic surgery.
GDV causes extreme pain and distress - dogs with bloat show obvious agony including pacing, unsuccessful retching, and abdominal distension. Death without treatment is agonizing. The availability of a preventive surgery (prophylactic gastropexy) makes GDV a particularly avoidable welfare emergency. High-risk breed owners should discuss prophylactic gastropexy at the time of spay or neuter.
