Animal welfare advocacy takes many forms with different effectiveness profiles. Evidence on which advocacy approaches produce the greatest welfare improvements helps prioritize limited time and resources.
Welfare advocacy effectiveness research is a young field but has produced some important findings. Corporate campaigning — targeting food companies and retailers to make welfare commitments — has achieved welfare improvements affecting enormous numbers of animals with relatively modest organizational resources. Individual behavior change matters but multiplies when connected to community norms and systems change. Strategic, evidence-informed advocacy targets the highest-leverage intervention points in the food system.
