Southern Resident killer whales are experiencing a welfare crisis driven by salmon scarcity. Pregnant and nursing females show visible emaciation. Failed pregnancies and stillbirths have increased. The animals are observable enough that individual welfare trajectories can be documented - and what is being documented is chronic nutritional distress across a critically small population.
