Thyroid tumors in dogs are usually malignant but often operable, and post-surgical hypothyroidism requires lifelong management.
Thyroid carcinoma in dogs often grows slowly, giving time for appropriate workup and treatment planning. Surgery that achieves complete excision is curative in non-metastatic cases. Post-surgical hypothyroidism is entirely manageable with levothyroxine, and most dogs return to excellent quality of life. Hypocalcemia, if it occurs post-surgically, requires immediate treatment but is usually transient.
