Leptospirosis is a re-emerging zoonotic disease in dogs with increasing urban cases, preventable through vaccination and environmental awareness.
Acute leptospirosis causes rapid, severe kidney and liver failure that causes significant suffering and carries mortality rates of 10-20% even with treatment. Survivors may have permanent kidney damage requiring lifelong management. Vaccination prevents infection at low cost - the welfare case for routine lepto vaccination in dogs with outdoor exposure is compelling.
