All four tapir species face habitat loss and road mortality as their primary threats across Central and South America.
Tapirs killed by vehicles suffer traumatic, often fatal injuries that may not be immediately lethal. Animals that survive vehicle strikes may have internal injuries causing prolonged suffering before death. Their large size makes them particularly susceptible to severe injury in high-speed vehicle collisions. Road-related mortality is largely preventable through appropriate speed limits, wildlife crossing design, and driver education.
