Olive ridley sea turtles engage in spectacular mass nesting events (arribadas) that create unique conservation and welfare management challenges.
The mass nesting strategy creates extraordinary hatchling mortality from natural causes including nest destruction by subsequent nesters. Human impacts including beach lighting and plastic debris add to this mortality. Mass emergence events create particularly acute vulnerability - millions of hatchlings entering the ocean simultaneously create opportunities for catastrophic harm from pollution or lighting. Protecting these brief windows matters enormously.
