Macaroni penguins are the most numerous penguin species but face severe krill depletion driven by climate change and industrial fishing.
Macaroni penguins in years of krill scarcity must travel farther to find food, spending more time at sea and less time feeding their chicks. Chicks that receive insufficient krill-based nutrition have reduced survival rates. The combination of climate-driven krill decline and commercial krill fishing creates compounding pressure on populations that are already declining.
