Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive spinal cord disease in older dogs, particularly German Shepherds and Corgis, that causes gradual paralysis requiring intensive welfare management as mobility declines.
DM presents a unique welfare challenge: dogs that are physically declining but mentally engaged and pain-free. The ethical management question is not pain relief but maintaining quality of life despite progressive immobility. Wheelchairs enable continued outdoor exercise, social interaction, and environmental exploration that maintain psychological welfare. Bladder and bowel management becomes essential as the disease progresses. The welfare decision point is when the dog can no longer maintain the engagement and positivity that characterizes DM throughout most of its course - when mobility aids cannot compensate for total loss of function.
