Syringomyelia secondary to Chiari-like malformation causes chronic neuropathic pain in affected dogs, particularly small brachycephalic breeds.
Syringomyelia causes chronic neuropathic pain that profoundly affects quality of life. Affected dogs may vocalize unpredictably, be sensitive to touch, and have interrupted sleep from discomfort. The condition is largely a consequence of selective breeding for brachycephalic skull shapes. Welfare requires both medical management for affected individuals and breeding reform to reduce prevalence.
