Fishing cats are small wildcats specialized for aquatic hunting whose wetland habitats are among the most threatened ecosystems globally.
Fishing cats' specialized ecology makes them highly vulnerable to wetland loss. Without access to water and aquatic prey, they cannot meet their fundamental behavioral and nutritional needs. In urban areas, road mortality and conflict with humans cause direct welfare harms. Their adaptability to human-modified landscapes is encouraging, but only if those landscapes retain aquatic habitats and human tolerance.
