Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease transmitted through wildlife-contaminated water, posing serious health risks to dogs and zoonotic risks to humans.
Acute leptospirosis causes significant suffering through fever, muscle pain, vomiting, and rapidly progressing organ failure. Dogs requiring intensive care hospitalization experience both the physical illness and the stress of hospitalization. Prevention through vaccination, avoiding stagnant water exposure, and wildlife management around homes is far more welfare-positive than treating established disease.
