Recognizing and managing pain in farmed pigs is essential to welfare but remains challenging due to industry practices and assessment limitations.
Pain management in pig farming has historically been neglected due to cost and the assumption that productive pigs aren't suffering. Research has shown this assumption is wrong - pigs in pain have elevated cortisol, reduced feed intake, and impaired immune function. Routine painful procedures performed without analgesia represent widespread unnecessary suffering. Adoption of pain assessment tools and analgesic protocols is both ethically required and productively beneficial.
