Andean condors are slowly recovering from near-extinction, but lead poisoning from spent ammunition remains a critical welfare threat to the population.
Lead poisoning causes a particularly agonizing death in condors - progressive neurological dysfunction, inability to fly, convulsions, and death over days to weeks. The poisoning occurs silently as condors feed on gut piles left by hunters using lead bullets. Switching to copper ammunition eliminates this welfare harm at essentially no cost to hunters. Individual condors that survive poisoning may require weeks of medical treatment.
