Freshwater turtles face severe pressure from the Asian food and medicine trade, with many species declining toward extinction.
Turtles in the trade suffer during transport in crowded, dry conditions without food or water for weeks. Many die before reaching markets. Those kept alive in markets face prolonged distress in inadequate conditions. Wild capture disrupts population age structures as large breeding adults are preferentially taken. The welfare and conservation harms of the turtle trade are inseparable - preventing trade protects both.
