Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome causes chronic respiratory difficulty in flat-faced breeds, significantly impairing welfare.
BOAS causes dogs to live in a state of chronic respiratory compromise - every breath is more effortful than for normal dogs. Many affected dogs cannot exercise normally, play vigorously, or thermoregulate in warm weather. Sleep apnea disrupts rest. Despite appearing 'normal' to owners who normalize breed-typical breathing sounds, BOAS dogs experience genuine chronic respiratory distress. Breeding reform is essential but surgery can dramatically improve welfare for currently affected animals.
