GDV is a life-threatening emergency in large breed dogs where the stomach rotates, requiring immediate surgery to prevent death.
GDV causes extreme pain from gastric distension and vascular compromise. Dogs in GDV show obvious distress with unproductive retching, abdominal distension, and rapid deterioration into shock. Every minute without treatment increases tissue death and mortality. Prophylactic gastropexy dramatically reduces this welfare risk in high-risk breeds with minimal surgical risk compared to emergency intervention.
