IMHA is a life-threatening autoimmune destruction of red blood cells requiring rapid diagnosis and aggressive immunosuppressive treatment.
IMHA causes acute severe anemia with profound weakness, breathlessness, and cardiovascular compromise. The rapidity of red blood cell destruction means dogs can deteriorate within hours. The treatment itself - high-dose immunosuppression - creates risks of infection and other complications. Dogs surviving the acute phase face weeks of careful monitoring and medication tapering. Welfare requires both rapid emergency treatment and attentive monitoring during the prolonged recovery period.
