Human respiratory viruses pose serious risks to great apes, requiring One Health approaches that protect both gorilla health and human wellbeing.
Respiratory infections in gorillas cause significant illness - wheezing, nasal discharge, lethargy, and pneumonia that can be fatal especially in infants and older individuals. The inability of gorillas to consent to or fully avoid human contact means disease prevention depends entirely on human behavior. Welfare requires strict health protocols for all humans entering gorilla contact zones, including mask wearing and health screening of research staff, rangers, and tourists.
