Elbow dysplasia is a complex developmental joint disease causing chronic forelimb pain in large breeds, partly addressable through breeding selection.
Elbow dysplasia causes chronic forelimb pain beginning in puppyhood and continuing lifelong as secondary osteoarthritis develops. Dogs with poorly managed elbow dysplasia experience persistent pain affecting movement, play, and sleep quality. The heritable nature means prevalence has grown with popularity of affected breeds. Breeding selection using BVA screening and DNA markers can progressively reduce prevalence, preventing future generations from suffering preventable chronic pain.
