Feline hepatic lipidosis is a life-threatening liver disease triggered by prolonged anorexia, most common in obese cats during stress.
Hepatic lipidosis causes jaundice, nausea, and progressive neurological deterioration as liver function fails. Affected cats are profoundly unwell with significant suffering from multiple organ effects. The condition is entirely preventable by ensuring cats eat every 24-48 hours and by addressing obesity to reduce fat mobilization risk. Early recognition and aggressive nutritional support via feeding tube enables recovery with good prognosis when initiated before severe liver failure.
