Cat Feline Mammary Tumors: Early Detection

Mammary tumors in cats are malignant in approximately 90% of cases, making early detection and surgical removal the most effective welfare intervention.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Mammary tumors cause local invasion, pain, and eventually systemic metastatic disease with weight loss, respiratory difficulty from lung involvement, and deterioration. Early detection through regular palpation enables surgery before local invasion and metastasis occurs, significantly improving both survival and welfare outcomes. Cats with undetected or delayed mammary tumors suffer progressive disease that is far more difficult to manage than small tumors caught early.
