Cat Feline Skin Fragility Syndrome

Feline skin fragility syndrome causes extremely delicate skin that tears easily, often secondary to hyperadrenocorticism or prolonged steroid use.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Skin fragility syndrome causes wounds from minimal trauma - normal handling, grooming, or cat behavior creates tears. These wounds are painful and heal poorly. Affected cats require extreme care during examination and treatment, which is stressful when necessary veterinary contact creates additional injuries. Treatment of the underlying hormonal cause can allow gradual return of skin integrity, but recovery is slow and requires months of careful management.
