Vestibular syndrome and stroke cause similar acute neurological signs in dogs but have different prognoses requiring accurate diagnosis.
Acute vestibular episodes cause apparent severe distress - affected dogs may roll uncontrollably, vomit repeatedly, and cannot stand. The experience for the dog involves disorientation, nausea, and inability to perform normal movements. Supportive care including anti-nausea medication and nursing management is the primary welfare intervention. Accurate prognosis communication is important - idiopathic vestibular disease carries an excellent prognosis that distinguishes it from potentially more serious conditions.
