Severe leukopenia from bone marrow suppression in cats requires investigation for infectious, toxic, and immune-mediated causes.
Severe leukopenia leaves cats defenseless against bacterial and fungal organisms. Infections from environmental bacteria cause sepsis in immunocompromised cats. The underlying conditions causing leukopenia - particularly FeLV and panleukopenia - also cause independent suffering. Isolation required during treatment creates social deprivation welfare challenges. Treatment of reversible causes including drug toxicity and immune-mediated disease can restore bone marrow function with dramatic clinical improvement.
