Sumatran orangutans are Critically Endangered with fewer than 14,000 remaining in rapidly shrinking Sumatran forests.
Sumatran orangutan welfare is in crisis. Habitat destruction eliminates the diverse forest environments their large, culturally-learning brains require. Orphaned infants from the pet trade face severe psychological trauma from witnessing maternal killing and years of inappropriate captive conditions. The most complex tool-using orangutan population faces the smallest and most rapidly declining habitat. Conservation urgency is extreme.
