Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) was once a universally fatal diagnosis. Antiviral drug treatments developed since 2019 have transformed FIP from a death sentence to a treatable disease, representing a major advance in feline welfare.
FIP causes severe, progressive suffering including fever, weight loss, fluid accumulation, and neurological signs. Before antiviral treatment, euthanasia was the only humane option. The advent of effective treatment has transformed the welfare calculus - cats with FIP can now recover fully. However, access barriers mean many cats still die unnecessarily. Advocacy for drug licensing and affordable access directly improves feline welfare worldwide.
