Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is a life-threatening condition in which the immune system destroys red blood cells. Prompt recognition and aggressive treatment are critical for survival and welfare.
Acute IMHA is a genuine welfare emergency. Dogs experience rapid deterioration with profound weakness, breathlessness from severe anemia, and the physical distress of a crisis illness. The treatment period is itself stressful - hospitalization, multiple medications, monitoring, and potential transfusions. Survivors face a long recovery with gradual immunosuppressive tapering over months. Relapse is common and each episode is a welfare crisis. Owners need preparation for the emotional and financial demands of IMHA management and honest conversations about prognosis.
