Lumpfish are used as cleaner fish in salmon aquaculture to control sea lice, but their own welfare is often overlooked. As their use has expanded, welfare concerns about lumpfish have grown substantially.
Lumpfish introduced as a welfare solution for salmon often experience severe welfare harms themselves. High mortality from salmon pen conditions, being eaten by salmon, and inadequate species-specific husbandry make lumpfish one of the most poorly treated animals in commercial aquaculture. Their welfare needs are just beginning to be studied. Using lumpfish without addressing their own welfare simply shifts suffering from salmon to lumpfish. Cleaner fish welfare standards are now being developed by leading certifying bodies but implementation remains poor.
