Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a condition in which the immune system destroys platelets, causing bleeding risk. With appropriate management, many dogs achieve remission and good quality of life.
Dogs with ITP face acute bleeding events that are frightening and painful, combined with the chronic effects of high-dose corticosteroid therapy including increased thirst, urination, and behavioral changes. The monitoring required - frequent blood counts during initial management - is stressful for anxious dogs. However, with appropriate treatment most dogs achieve remission. Welfare during the treatment period is significantly improved by using the minimum effective corticosteroid dose, preventing environmental injury risks, and monitoring closely for complications including secondary infections.
