Bacterial skin infection (pyoderma) is among the most common conditions seen in veterinary practice. Effective management requires identifying and addressing underlying causes, not just treating infections.
Pyoderma causes skin irritation, pain, and itching that significantly impairs daily comfort. Deep pyoderma with cellulitis is particularly painful and can require weeks of treatment. Recurrent pyoderma from undiagnosed atopic dermatitis or hypothyroidism means dogs experience repeated infection cycles with ongoing discomfort. Identifying and managing the underlying condition is the only welfare-positive long-term approach. Antibiotic stewardship - using topical antiseptics when appropriate and reserving antibiotics for culture-confirmed resistant cases - is both a welfare and public health imperative.
