West Indian manatees face severe welfare harms from motorboat propeller strikes in Florida and the Caribbean. Speed restrictions and exclusion zones directly reduce individual animal suffering.
Individual manatees struck by boats experience severe traumatic wounds that cause acute pain and, in non-fatal cases, prolonged suffering during healing. Propeller strike injuries that penetrate the spinal column cause paralysis and death in hours to days. Speed zone enforcement is directly protective for individual animals. Rehabilitation centers including SeaWorld and the Jacksonville Zoo provide critical welfare interventions for injured manatees - rescuing, treating, and releasing animals that would otherwise die. Each manatee struck and rescued represents both a welfare intervention and a conservation success.
