Feline panleukopenia (feline parvovirus) is a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease that is almost entirely preventable through vaccination. Understanding this disease enables effective protection.
Cats with panleukopenia experience severe, rapidly progressive disease - vomiting, diarrhea, profound weakness, and often death within days. It is a genuinely terrible disease for individual animals. The high mortality even with treatment and the effectiveness of vaccination make this one of the clearest welfare cases in veterinary medicine: vaccination prevents suffering that is otherwise nearly certain in exposed unvaccinated cats. Shelter protocols that include vaccination on intake, quarantine, and environmental decontamination protect colony-level welfare. No kitten or cat should die from panleukopenia - prevention is entirely within reach.
