Salmon in commercial aquaculture live in largely barren net-pen environments. Enrichment research is beginning to identify low-cost interventions that improve individual fish welfare at scale.
Salmon in barren net-pen environments show behavioral indicators of reduced welfare including stereotypic surface snorkeling and higher aggression rates. Research into environmental enrichment for salmon is nascent but promising: simple physical structures reduce aggressive interactions and fin damage. Feeding regime variations that reduce predictability may improve welfare by reducing the frustration of anticipatory feeding behavior. These are relatively low-cost interventions that could be implemented at scale. The challenge is that salmon welfare research is underfunded relative to salmon production research, leaving the evidence base thin.
