Cat Polycystic Kidney Disease: Genetic Testing and Prevention

PKD is an inherited condition in Persian and related breeds causing kidney cysts that progressively impair renal function; genetic testing can eliminate the disease from breeding lines.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

PKD causes progressive kidney failure in a substantial proportion of Persian cats - representing a massive preventable welfare burden. Since the causative mutation is known and a simple test exists, there is no ethical justification for continuing to breed PKD-positive cats. The welfare cost of renal failure in cats - including nausea, inappetence, and uremia - is severe and prolonged.
