Carp are the most widely farmed fish globally by volume, yet welfare standards for their production remain largely underdeveloped relative to their scale.
Despite their enormous numbers, carp receive almost no welfare attention compared to salmon or even shrimp. High-density pond culture can cause oxygen depletion, stress, and disease. Slaughter methods including ice slurry and live transport over long distances are rarely assessed for welfare. The sheer scale of carp farming - hundreds of billions of animals - means even marginal welfare improvements would have enormous impact.
