Sea turtles are disproportionately affected by plastic pollution through ingestion, entanglement, and nesting beach contamination across all seven surviving species.
Sea turtles entangled in plastic or fishing gear experience prolonged suffering - often swimming impaired for weeks before dying of exhaustion or infection. Turtles with stomach full of plastic experience starvation while feeling full. Sea turtle rescue programs that remove entanglement and rehabilitate injured individuals provide direct welfare interventions, but prevention of plastic pollution is the primary welfare priority.
