Colic is the leading cause of premature death in horses; rapid recognition and appropriate veterinary response prevents suffering and saves lives.
Colic pain ranges from mild discomfort to agonizing visceral pain requiring immediate surgical intervention. The welfare harm of delayed veterinary response to colic cannot be overstated - horses that could have been saved with prompt surgery die or are euthanized after prolonged suffering. Teaching horse owners when to call and what not to do (forcing walking in severe colic) reduces preventable suffering enormously.
